The painting was executed in c. 1415 and is held by\u00a0Taiz\u014d-in, a sub-temple of the\u00a0My\u014dshin-ji\u00a0complex of\u00a0Zen Buddhist\u00a0temples in\u00a0Kyoto. It is one of the earliest\u00a0<i>suiboku<\/i>\u00a0(ink wash) paintings in Japan and was designated as a\u00a0National Treasure of Japan\u00a0in 1951. The painting is accompanied by many inscriptions, and may be considered an example of\u00a0<i>shigajiku<\/i>\u00a0(a &#8220;poem-and-painting scroll&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Josetsu was born and trained as an artist in China but settled in Japan. He was one of the first\u00a0<i>suiboku<\/i> painters working in Japan in the\u00a0Muromachi period.<\/p>\n<p>The work was inspired by a riddle set by\u00a0Ashikaga Yoshimochi, the fourth\u00a0<i>sh\u014dgun<\/i>\u00a0of the\u00a0Ashikaga shogunate: &#8220;How do you catch a catfish with a gourd?&#8221; The full scroll measures 111.5 cm \u00d7 75.8 cm (43.9 in \u00d7 29.8 in), with long inscription above the painting recording the sh\u014dgun&#8217;s rhetorical question and also that Josetsu drew an answer, and naming 31 leading Zen monks who each provide a written response to the sh\u014dgun&#8217;s question.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catching_a_catfish_with_a_gourd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wikipedia entry<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Catching a catfish with a gourd\u00a0(\u74e2\u9b8e\u56f3,\u00a0Hy\u014d-nen-zu)\u00a0is a\u00a0hanging scroll\u00a0painting by the 15th-century artist\u00a0Josetsu\u00a0(\u5982\u62d9).
