Part of the BDK English Tripi\u1e6daka Series.<\/p>\n<p>Xuanzang\u2019s disciple Ji \u57fa (632\u2013682, also known as Kuiji \u7aba\u57fa), gives the following explanation in his commentary on this work:<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">Nine hundred years after the Buddha passed away, the bodhisattva Asa\u1e45ga was born into the world. He went to Maitreya to request a teaching on the great \u015b\u0101stra, the circumstances of which are as explained elsewhere. Maitreya taught the verses (k\u0101rik\u0101) of this \u015b\u0101stra, called the \u201cVerses Analyzing the Middle and Extremes,\u201d which Asa\u1e45ga received and subsequently passed onto Vasubandhu to have them explained in detail.
